Prague - the bohemian heart of Europe

20 February 2020

This city is full of secrets and legends. Each quarter of it has its own unique image, every house is a work of art. What is this place where so much mysterious and amazing is concentrated? Of course, this is Prague!

Prague is considered to be one of the brightest and most beautiful cities in Europe.

The history of the city goes back to the 6th century BC. True, at that time there was a small settlement on the site of today's modern metropolis. Prague acquired the status of the capital of the Czech state many centuries later, in the 10th century AD. Today, the capital of the Czech Republic is of great importance for European and world culture in general. It is unlikely that anyone will dare to challenge the fact that, in fact, Prague is a museum city, of course, if we are talking about its old central part.

As many as five districts of the city have been recognized by UNESCO and awarded the title of architectural and historical reserves. Here, each building, structure, represents one or another architectural style. The Prague Ensemble may well become an illustrated guide to the study of the Baroque and Gothic styles. Prague, founded in the 9th century on the Vltava River, is one of the oldest settlements in Europe.

In 1784, Emperor Joseph II united five small Prague towns, which, despite being isolated from each other by depressions, were very closely connected by cultural and economic life. So Prague received the status of a city. Exploring the Czech capital.

One of the main events in the history of Prague is the construction of St. Vitus Cathedral - the pearl of European Gothic. Six centuries the construction of the main Czech cathedral was carried out. The result was a monumental building, distinguished by its majesty and unity of composition. Looking closely at the facades of the cathedral building, you understand what a titanic work was invested in the construction, and why it went on for six centuries. The cathedral is surrounded by small beautiful houses, which also deserve attention.

Inside the cathedral, you can sit on a bench and marvel at the colorful stained-glass windows. Also in the cathedral there is a secret room where many gold items are stored, in particular, a book with a gold binding.

Having admired the beauties of St. Vitus Cathedral, it is worth turning left - to Zlata Street - the center of sorcery and alchemy, where many exciting things await.
Here is a variety of weapons, and a torture room, and medieval knights, whose armor can be seen in detail. You need to complete your journey in the Jewish district, where the famous Old New Synagogue with a beautiful patterned roof is located - the oldest functioning synagogue in Europe.

On the elevation of the left bank of the Vltava is the district of Prague Hradcany.

Here is the Prague Castle, which was the residence of the Bohemian kings in the Middle Ages. Many beautiful palaces, majestic cathedrals and monasteries are concentrated here, as well as the Hungry Wall - the surviving part of the fortress that protected the city in ancient times. No less interesting is the plague column - a column on top of which is a sculpture of the Virgin Mary. Such a monument was erected by Prague residents in the Middle Ages as a token of gratitude for the end of the plague and the end of the pestilence. Prague is a treasure chest.

To feel the spirit of Prague, you should definitely take a walk along the Old Town Square - look into souvenir shops, buy a guidebook or a postcard in a bookstore (almost everywhere all this is on sale in Russian).
You should not miss the opportunity to admire the pretty red-tiled roofs from the Old Town Hall. The height of the town hall building is small, but the panorama is amazing. The Old Town Hall is also famous for its outlandish chimes. Crowds of tourists tend to watch an interesting performance that this astronomical clock puts on every hour. Then you can take a walk to the weapons shop, located nearby. The exhibits presented there will not leave indifferent even those who are far from weapons business. Opposite the Stromestsk town hall is the Temple of the Virgin Mary in front of Tyn, a very interesting architecture. Moreover, almost all the buildings on the square are original, original and attract attention. You can wander for a long time along the Old Town Square itself, or you can randomly turn into any street - and there will definitely be some kind of attraction! From the square to the Vltava River there is a short Parisian street built in the Art Nouveau style. It is famous for its chic restaurants, expensive hotels and world brand stores.

Prague is rightly called "hundred-towered".

The Powder Tower delights with its beauty, which you can admire while walking around the Old City. No less beautiful is the tower of Charles Bridge. And the Charles Bridge itself is a real open-air museum of sculptures. Charles Bridge is perhaps the city's most famous landmark. It was erected in the era of the dark and cold Middle Ages. This unique and the only building of this type in the world, designed in the Gothic style, is set on sixteen arched structures. The bridge is crowned with thirty sculptures, and its length exceeds five hundred meters. At the same time, the monuments installed on the roadsides on both sides of the bridge were created much later, and therefore represent the exquisite and luxurious baroque style in all its glory. So, connecting the old part of Prague and Prague Castle, Charles Bridge is a unity of two significant eras in the cultural life of Europe: the Gothic of the Middle Ages and the Baroque of the Renaissance.

Most of the sculptures were created by the hands of such masters as Matthias Braun and Jan Brokoff. The most interesting of them are: a Turk guarding captive Christians (date of erection - 1714), "Vision of St. Luitgarda" (installed in 1710) and "Holy Cross" - one of the first sculptural groups installed on the Charles Bridge in 1657.

Prague is like a magical chest filled to the brim with treasures - legends, secrets, beauties - everyone will find something interesting here for themselves.
