“In my Spanish villa in the Hollywood Hills, I created my own mid-century Moroccan direction. Spacious interior showcase of my signature exotic with lots of Moroccan arches, marble floors, black and white tiles, sexy seating, warm hardwood accents, cool brass, vintage photography and British wit."

A Brief and Fascinating History of the Self-Taught Designer

Martin Lawrence Bullard was born March 30, 1967 in London. Englishman with Italian and French roots.

Martin's father was an opera singer who later became a businessman. Due to his father's acting profession, Martin traveled to many cities and countries in Europe as a child. He visited wonderful castles, magnificent palaces, grandiose cathedrals and famous museums. This obviously influenced the development of Bullard's artistic taste and design abilities.

As a teenager, he literally lost his head from the markets where antique and vintage items were sold.

“At the age of 12, I became a kind of magpie, who was attracted to everything shiny and beautiful. I went to almost all the flea markets and flea markets, which were a craze in England 20 years ago, and with the money allocated to me I bought all sorts of things.

At the age of 13, I convinced my father to rent a stall for me at a local flea market, and found that by displaying the product beautifully, for example, by posting like with like, I was able to attract the attention of visitors and sell what I was buying. This entire process was a learning platform for understanding the decorative arts and timing of antique pieces. It was just a wonderful experience.

And the most beautiful thing is that my father really believed in me and encouraged my work. He woke up at 6 am to take me to the market and help set up the stall. It was a real bond between father and son. My outlet was located in the antique market Greenwich Market - a historic district and a "trap" for tourists. The biggest clients I had were the Americans. Usually I was able to charm them. I think it was the first step on the way to America.”

By the age of 16, Martin was well versed in antiques, learned to identify the age of antique objects, and began to understand their artistic and decorative merits. He not only loved beautiful products, but also knew their history. Martin met many sellers and collectors. Among Bullard's most significant clients was Ralph Lauren's chief buyer, who purchased a variety of window dressing for Ralph Lauren's boutiques on Madison Avenue in New York and Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.

Deciding to become an actor, Martin used the money he earned to enroll in an acting studio at London's Covent Garden. During his studies, he continued to engage in the antique business and, having accumulated a sufficient amount, he moved to Los Angeles.

In Hollywood, Bullard appeared in several small roles. Once he invited the producer and his girlfriend to his place for dinner. “I rented a miniature house and decorated it with items from the local Santa Monica flea market. Decorated everything in London style with a mixture of British colonial items. The guests loved it and asked me to decorate their offices.”

Bullard was then tasked with decorating the offices and home of producer and entrepreneur Liz Heller, whom USA Today describes as the "godmother" of the women's cyber movement in Hollywood. Liz Heller asked Martin to help with her wedding ceremony. There he met Cheryl Tiegs, the famous American model, actress and fashion designer, who became Martin Bullard's first superstar client. Martin designed Cheryl Tiegs' house in the spirit of the Balinese pavilion, photographs of which have appeared on the covers of a dozen magazines. After that, Bullard's list of stellar clients began to grow. Martin abandoned his dreams of acting and devoted himself to design.

Today, Martin Lawrence Bullard is an interior designer for show business stars and a decorator for luxury hotels around the world. He is the author of several collections of wall tiles for Ann Sacks, fabrics for Schumacher, carpets for The Rug Company and a wallpaper collection for Martyn Lawrence Bullard for the famous British company Cole & Son. And of course, the sensational talk show "Interior for a Million".
