The exterior of the new BMW i4 is characterized by elegant proportions and a decidedly sporty character. The long wheelbase, combined with short overhangs and a sloping roofline, creates a squat silhouette. Frameless doors and slim roof pillars not only improve visibility, but also enhance the driving experience of a BMW sports car.

The body of the BMW i4 is carefully thought out in terms of aerodynamics. Every element, from the front bumper to the tailgate spoiler, aims to improve aerodynamic performance. BMW designers and engineers have paid attention to even those surfaces that are not visible to the eye in everyday use. For example, the high-voltage battery housing, engine compartment protection and aerodynamic suspension pads form a flat plane with seamless transitions. The rear diffuser effectively directs the air flow coming out from under the bottom.

An active air damper at the bottom of the radiator grille, which has 10 steps of adjustment, helps to reduce aerodynamic resistance. Special Air Curtains on the edges of the front bumper direct the air flow along the wheels. In addition, the optional BMW Individual wheels are further optimized in terms of aerodynamics by means of special inserts between the spokes.

The entire package of aerodynamic improvements delivers energy savings that translate into approximately 10 kilometers more range on a single charge, according to the WLTP test cycle. The drag coefficient of the electric BMW i4 is only 0.24.

Chassis settings and characteristics.

i4 – BMW's most driving electric car ever The electric BMW i4 combines BMW's legendary sporty handling with elegant design, uncompromising quality and Gran Coupe practicality.

All BMW's many years of sporting experience has been invested in the development of the power plant and chassis of the BMW i4. The high dynamic potential of the model went far beyond fast acceleration in a straight line.

The chassis design of the BMW i4 consists of a front double wishbone and a rear five-link suspension. Servotronic electromechanical steering, DSC dynamic stability control and rear axle air suspension are already available as standard equipment.

The BMW i4 M50 version is equipped with Adaptive M Suspension and M Sport Brakes. Torque distribution between the two electric motors is much faster and more precise than would be possible with a traditional transfer case located between the axles.

While the wheel slip limit function instantly eliminates loss of traction, DSC optimizes directional stability by selectively activating the brakes on each wheel. Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) provides higher levels of wheel slip, helping the driver to explore the limits of the vehicle.

For the most experienced drivers, the DSC off mode is intended, which does not allow electronic assistants to interfere with the operation of the brakes and gives the driver access to prolonged controlled drifts.

High voltage battery and recharge technologies.

i4 – BMW's most driving electric car ever The electric BMW i4 combines BMW's legendary sporty handling with elegant design, uncompromising quality and Gran Coupe practicality.

The lightweight and efficient design of the power plant provides impressive dynamics and an impressive range without the need for large and heavy batteries. The battery of the latest BMW i4 consists of four 72-cell modules and three 12-cell modules. The total battery capacity is 83.9 kWh.

The architecture on which the BMW i4 is based was originally developed for an electric propulsion system. Power elements such as the front axle subframe and torsion bars are rigidly connected to the high-voltage battery housing.

The BMW i4 battery has an extremely low cell height of just 110 mm. Thanks to the location of the battery in the vehicle floor, the center of gravity of the BMW i4 is 53 mm lower than in the BMW 3 Series Sedan. This is the key to unparalleled BMW style precision handling.

The BMW i4 is equipped with an integrated heating and cooling system with heat pump function for the interior, high-voltage battery and powertrain. The BMW i4 heat pump system uses the thermal energy of the environment and the heat generated by the engines. At low outside temperatures, this results in a range increase of approximately 15% compared to conventional electrical systems.

In addition, predictive battery thermal management optimizes battery operating temperature before stopping at a fast charging station, making the battery charging process faster and more efficient.

Connecting to a regular household socket or Wallbox charger allows you to charge the high-voltage battery from both single-phase and three-phase AC mains with charging speeds up to 11 kW. Using this method, the BMW i4 can fully recharge the battery in less than 8.5 hours.

Installing the Combined Charging Unit gives you access to DC fast charging stations up to 200kW. At these stations, in just 10 minutes, the range of the BMW i4 eDrive40 can be increased to 164 km, and the range of the BMW i4 M50 to 140. In Europe, BMW Charging is also available with charging at public charging stations and powerful IONITY terminals at special rates .

In addition to the usual ways to recharge the battery, the BMW i4 uses adaptive brake energy regeneration. The intensity of the energy recovery can be adapted to the driving situation thanks to data from the driver assistance and navigation systems. For example, when approaching an intersection, the regeneration power can be increased using the slowdown effect, and on straight sections of the road, the coasting mode is activated. The maximum recuperation power is 116 kW for the BMW i4 eDrive40 version and 195 kW for the BMW i4 M50 version.

The concept of sustainable development.

The new BMW i4 will be produced at the BMW Group plant in Munich. It is important to note that only environmentally friendly energy is used in the production of batteries for electric vehicles. At the same time, the entire life cycle of an electric vehicle, from resource extraction to disposal and recycling, is aimed at massively reducing CO2 emissions.

The special design of the motors avoids the use of rare earth materials, and the cobalt and lithium for the batteries are mined in the most sustainable and environmentally friendly way. The proportion of cobalt in the BMW i4 battery cathodes has been reduced to less than 10%. As a result, up to 90% of the materials in battery construction can be recycled.
